Alistair Carmichael, member of British House of Commons and leader of Liberal Democrats Party, has underlined the great significance of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani's visit to the United Kingdom, and praised Qatar's efforts and remarkable diplomatic role in several critical international files, mainly in the Arab region.
In an interview with the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the veteran parliamentarian, who is also the vice-chair of the Qatar All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and of the All-Party Parliamentary British-Qatari Group, said that Qatar plays a pivotal role as a link between Britain and the Arab countries, and has been representing a bridge of communication with the Arab countries for many years.
Carmichael described the relations between Qatar and the UK as extraordinary and crucial, and based on mutual respect.
He hailed the distinguished economic relations, the great investments made by Qatar in the UK and the partnership between the two countries in numerous fields, such as in renewable energy.
Carmichael added that Qatari investments play a crucial role in developing the British industrial base, including investments in the Rolls-Royce Holdings Company.
He expressed the hope for similar investments in other industrial sectors.
Carmichael also expressed admiration for the preparations made by Qatar to host the FIFA World Cup 2022.
He said that he is confident that the FIFA World Cup 2022 would be completely different from all its former editions, as for the first time, football fans will be able to attend more than one match in the same day.
Also, it will be the first time to hold this global event in November-December, and the first time for an Arab country to host such a big sporting event.
Carmichael said that Qatar is witnessing significant development and is becoming open to the world in a highly impressive way.
He praised the reforms adopted by Qatar to develop the labour market and strengthen the rights of expatriate workers.
On the matter of defence and military co-operation between Qatar and Britain, Carmichael underlined that the two countries enjoy close relations in the field of defence and security co-operation.
