The emergency departments of the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) extended exemplary services during the Eid- al-Fitr holidays while taking care of emergency cases and accidents. A total of 2,238 cases were dealt with by HMC until the third day of Eid al-Fitr. Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that these included 1,834 pediatric cases while 404 cases including 23 accident cases were attended by the emergency departments. The ambulance department received 244 calls and one of these was taken care of by the air ambulance.
Dr. Mohamed al-Amiri, Head of the Pediatric Department and Director of Pediatric Emergency at HMC said that the pediatric emergency departments received 1834 cases and 1027 of these were referred to the Pediatric Emergency Department in Al-Sadd. Two of the patients were admitted to intensive care.
There were seven cases that were admitted for treatment in the internal section of the dam emergency and 42 cases were admitted to the observation section. The Pediatric Emergency Department in Rayyan received 480 cases while the airport emergency department received 188 cases and the Pediatric Emergency Department in Al-Daayen received 137 cases. Two cases were admitted to Hamad Hospital for treatment.
Al-Amri said the reason for the increase in the number of emergency cases among children is the attempt of most families to provide treatments to children at home while waiting for the situation to improve. “While the ailment doesn’t show improvement it’s transferred to the emergency,” he said adding that these numbers will witness an increase after Eid due to the change in the weather. “Most of the cases that were repeated on the third day of Eid Al-Fitr are cases of colds and high temperatures, in addition to a number of intestinal colds, and high temperature for newborns, even if their number is very few,” he said.
He urged parents not to leave their children under any circumstance in public or private swimming pools at home alone or with domestic workers, especially since monitoring children is the responsibility of parents.
Dr. Youssef al-Tayeb, emergency medicine consultant at HMC, said that the emergency department received 404 cases from 6 am until 6 pm on the third day of Eid Al Fitr. “Most of the cases that were attended by the emergency departments on the third day of Eid Al-Fitr are cases related to the digestive system. “This is as a result of excessive eating,” he said uring all to avoid overeating of meals, especially saturated with fats and sugars and compensate for this with fruits, proteins and vegetables. Also, he advised not to excessively caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee and soft drinks, because of their contribution to diuresis.
