The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), represented by the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), has launched a new e-service that helps consumers request for an electricity connection needed for electric vehicle charging stations at their locations. The service has been introduced to facilitate the application process and comes as part of efforts made to encourage and support the use of electric vehicles, Kahramaa has said in a statement.
The new service will help the consumer request for an electricity connection (new connection and additional meter) for their own electric vehicle charging stations in accordance with the working mechanism announced with regard to Tarsheed via the digital platform on Kahramaa's website, km.qa. Kahramaa gives consumers the ability to request this service by choosing KMSP in the subscriber services section of its website as well. The working mechanism for installing and operating electric vehicle charging stations is divided into two sections. The first section is for government buildings and State-owned public places, while the second section deals with private locations such as malls and hotels. The charging units in these places must also be of the DC category (fast charging).
The application mechanism for the residential sector, in which charging units are only allowed in the AC category of no more than 11 kilowatts, will be announced soon, according to the guidelines for electric vehicle charging stations published in the Tarsheed section of the Kahramaa website. Tarsheed director Abdul Aziz Ahmed al-Hammadi expressed his happiness at this new step in support of efforts made to establish the infrastructure necessary for sustainable transport. “Tarsheed will announce a new strategy soon in co-operation with various stakeholders, including ministries. We are proud of achieving this progress, which would not have been possible without the concerted efforts of all parties concerned,” he said.
The service of delivering electricity to vehicle charging stations comes as a continuation of Kahramaa’s intensive efforts to provide an integrated system that supports sustainability while fulfilling the requirements of the smart grid, and encourages the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions and reducing harmful carbon emissions, in order to reach its goal of achieving complete carbon neutrality in 2050.
Kahramaa, through Tarsheed, has completed the installation and operation of 25 charging stations for electric vehicles, distributed over a number of vital sites. Tarsheed is also implementing the project of 100 stations for electric vehicle charging stations, which is scheduled to be completed before the start of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
This is in order to provide all the services and infrastructure necessary for the operation and use of electric vehicles, in the context of continuous work to achieve the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030. This also comes in line with the requirements of sustainable development within the framework of the Paris Agreement to which Qatar is committed and as per the climate change strategy for 2021-2025 in Qatar. Through Tarsheed, Kahramaa looks to intensify efforts to provide a healthy and safe environment for future generations, through its continuous work to launch initiatives that enhance sustainability, reduce harmful carbon emissions and rationalise the consumption of energy and water.
