The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs organised a seminar titled 'The Holy Qur'an and the Tazkiyah (purification) Approach' as part of the cultural activities of the Ramadan Book Fair, which will continue until April 16, in the western square of Souq Waqif. Dr Adel Rafoush, General Supervisor of the Ben Tashfin Foundation for Contemporary Studies, Research and Creativity (Morocco), gave a lecture during the seminar.
Dr Rafoush addressed the concept of Tazkiyah (purification), explaining that the purpose of Allah's creation is to populate the earth with righteousness, and so he showed us the path of guidance and integrity, to be able to achieve this task. He emphasised that the jurisdiction, including what is permitted and prohibited, and commands and prohibitions, all came for the benefit of human beings. Therefore Allah Almighty gave the human soul great care of guidance and education with what the scholars called Tazkiyah (purification), which means the development, purification and straightening of the matter, and shielding it from corruption and distortion. This is the approach by which the soul remains upright, pure, and far from everything that afflicts it.
He pointed out that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) loved the sublime matters that transcend the soul and hated the insignificant ones that descend to the lowermost, and said: Allah Almighty singled out purification with an oath in the Qur’an, in Surah Ash Shams (the sun) “And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it, And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, He has succeeded who purifies it, And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].” (91:7-9) The verses in which Allah, Glory be to Him, swears by this soul, informing His servants that it is not less in its greatness than the wonders of creation mentioned at the beginning of the surah.
Dr Rafoush added: Allah Almighty has linked success to self-purification, as he placed loss and disappointment on those who trampled it. He noted that self-purification is carried out to glorify the self that needs to be tamed with education, work and good companionship, and persistence in doing good deeds to transcend the soul.
He noted that the Qur’an’s concern for the soul and its levels, including the reassuring self, the blameworthy self, and the self that commands evil, to confirm that Allah created the self on sound instinct and integrity based on the love of goodness and guidance to the Most Merciful.
