ExxonMobil Qatar and Texas A&M University at Qatar (Tamuq), a Qatar Foundation partner, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration to advance climate solutions.
The agreement was signed by Dominic Genetti, president and general manager of ExxonMobil Qatar, and Dr César Octavio Malavé, dean of Tamuq, in a ceremony in Education City.
As the world’s leading producer of Liquefied Natural Gas and Gas to Liquids products, Qatar is uniquely positioned to play a critical role in achieving a lower emissions energy future through fuel switching, primarily from coal to clean-burning natural gas alternatives. Qatar remains committed to reducing emissions and becoming a more sustainable energy producer. In 2019, ExxonMobil Research Qatar established the Qatar Carbon Management Initiative to support Qatar in addressing the dual challenge of providing reliable and affordable energy to the world while reducing environmental impacts.
“This agreement represents an exciting extension of the partnership between ExxonMobil Qatar and Texas A&M at Qatar, building on several collaborations in the areas of process safety research and risk assessment,” Genetti said. “By bringing our complementary skills and experience together, both in business and academia, we are not only helping Qatar achieve its decarbonisation ambitions but also creating opportunities to support others on their journey towards reducing carbon emissions.”
Under the new agreement, ExxonMobil Qatar and Tamuq will work together to leverage each organisation’s unique strengths in areas applicable to the energy sector, especially in the area of sustainability.
Programmes and initiatives developed through this partnership will foster innovation and facilitate the development and use of state-of-the-art technologies. These initiatives will aim to build talent in the area of carbon management, particularly targeting university students and early-career professionals with an interest in the energy industry.
In the first phase of this collaboration, ExxonMobil will mentor and offer a full scholarship to a master/PhD’s student in the Chemical Engineering Programme and will also deliver a short course through the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s Student Engineering Enrichment Programme on Energy and Climate to Education City students.
