HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani expressed his condolences and those of the State of Qatar on the death of the Kenyan ambassador to the country, Patrick Cornel Odero Ahenda.
Earlier, the Kenyan embassy in Doha announced the passing away of Ahenda early Monday morning. "The late ambassador passed away on Monday, 4th April, 2022, at 3am at Hamad hospital," the embassy statement informed.
Ahenda had served as the Kenyan ambassador to Qatar since February 2019.
In a tweet posted on his official Twitter account, HE Sheikh Mohamed said Ahenda was "keen to strengthen relations of co-operation between the two countries and the two friendly peoples, noting that in this regard he made appreciable efforts, which we remember with gratitude."
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said "it received with great sadness the news of the death of the ambassador of the friendly Republic of Kenya to the country, Patrick Cornel Odero Ahenda."
In a statement, the ministry expressed Qatar's condolences to the government and people of Kenya, the family of the deceased, his friends and colleagues, and noted the appreciated efforts made by the deceased to develop relations between the two friendly countries in all fields, the official Qatar News Agency reported.
The Kenyan embassy said a condolence book to commemorate the life of the late ambassador will be opened at the mission and the official residence in Dafna, Street 871, Zone 68, Building 42, from today until April 7, between 10am and 2pm.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a message of condolence to the family, relatives and friends of Ahenda, according to Kenyan media reports.
In his message, Kenyatta eulogised the envoy as a dedicated and committed diplomat who was keen on deepening Kenya’s relations with Qatar and the Arab world.
“We have lost one of Kenya’s most devoted diplomats who was keen on strengthening our relations with not only Qatar but the entire Arab world for the benefit of our people,” the president mourned, noting that Ahenda had overseen tremendous growth in trade and people-to-people exchanges between Nairobi and Doha during his tenure.
