Today, I begin my working visit to Qatar, one of the benchmark countries in the Middle East.
Although these days Qatar is more than ever in the minds of many Mexicans for its forthcoming hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar and Mexico have had a strong and profitable relationship for several years.
As part of this working visit, I will have a courtesy meeting with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, head of State of Qatar, to whom I will share the greetings from President Lopez Obrador.
This will be an ideal occasion to convey Mexico’s interest in deepening the relationship through joint initiatives that promote innovation, technological development and social welfare.
I will also meet with my Qatari counterpart, HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. On the agenda, there are remarkable opportunities such as developing air connectivity between the two countries, expanding bilateral investment flows, as well as strengthening co-operation ties on critical issues such as the environment, social development, water preservation, health and education.
I will be speaking with HE Hassan al-Thawadi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, in charge of organising the 2022 World Cup, to exchange views on the mechanisms that will be put in place for the care of fans, particularly Mexicans travelling to Qatar.
As part of an event with the Mexican community, I will have the honour of awarding the “Distinguished Mexicans” recognition to Velibor “Bora” Milutinovic, whom many of us remember with special affection for his achievements at the helm of the Mexican national soccer team.
Finally, I will participate in the Doha Forum, a global platform for dialogue that brings together global leaders, policy makers, decision makers, entrepreneurs and communicators.
Mexico’s participation in this forum is of the utmost importance to present the priorities of our country and to exchange views with world leaders on the challenges we all face globally, particularly in the wake of the health crisis.
I am accompanied on this official visit by a group of Mexican businesspeople whom we are working with hand in hand for the benefit of Mexico.
Qatar offers significant economic opportunities for engagement with investment funds, which have the potential to contribute to the Mexican government’s efforts towards development.
We will also seek to promote greater commercial exchange and the potential launch of joint projects.
I am confident that our partnership with Qatar will strengthen as a result of our common ground, to the benefit of our respective societies.
