The International Air Transport Association's (IATA) 78th annual general meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit will take place in Doha on June 19-21, 2022, hosted by Qatar Airways.
This will be the second time that the global gathering of aviation’s top leaders will be held in Qatar; the first being in 2014.
Originally, the AGM and World Air Transport Summit were planned for the same dates in Shanghai, China, hosted by China Eastern Airlines. The decision to change the venue reflects the continuing Covid-19 related restrictions on travel to China.
“It is deeply disappointing that we are a not able to meet in Shanghai as planned. In the meantime, we are pleased to be returning to the dynamic aviation hub of Doha and the warm hospitality for which Qatar Airways, our host airline, has become famous. This year’s AGM will be an important opportunity for aviation’s leaders to reflect on the shifting political, economic, and technological realities facing air travel as the industry’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic gathers pace,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.
The organisational meeting of the IATA was held in Havana, Cuba in April, 1945 and IATA formally came into being on the 19th of that month. Later that year, in October, the first AGM of IATA was held in Montreal. At that time, there were 57 members from 31 countries. Today, IATA represents some 290 members from all over the world.
The 55th AGM, in Rio de Janeiro in 1999, marked the first formal use of World Air Transport Summit, in recognition of the status of the IATA AGM as the premier, industry-wide platform for the debate of critical issues at the highest level.
