The local dates festival, organised by the Souq Waqif management in co-operation with the Ministry of Municipality, began on Tuesday and will continue until the beginning of April.
Mohamed al-Salim, head of the Old Markets Section at the Souq Waqif administration, said the festival is being held at Al Ahmad Square (Eastern Square) in Souq Waqif and will include all Qatari varieties of dates, especially ones with a higher demand.
The event has the participation of 70 specialised companies and farms.
He said the festival offers customers competitive prices, which are lower than those found in retail outlets, as the dates come to the festival directly from farms.
Al-Salim noted that the festival aims to supply the people with their needs of dates ahead of the holy month of Ramadan due to the increased demand for the product on the occasion. At the same time, it seeks to encourage farmers to increase and improve their production of dates.
He said the exhibitors and participants at the festival enjoy the full support of the Souq Waqif management as participation is free of charge and the festival will be popular among Souq visitors.
The venue of the festival will be open from 9am until 9pm daily and until 10pm on Fridays and Thursdays.
He added that the festival will be limited to dates and dates syrup products only and there are strict standards to maintain the quality and health of the products.
