The 3rd International Conference on Smart Grid and Renewable Energy (SGRE 2022) opened in Doha Sunday, in conjunction with the 7th General Conference of the Arab Union of Electricity, QNA reported.
In remarks on the sidelines of the opening of the two conferences, HE President of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corp (Kahramaa) Eng Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari said that the organisation of the two conferences, in addition to the accompanying exhibitions, at the same time and location, represents a valuable opportunity to meet and interact with specialists.
He noted that more than 600 specialists are taking part in the two events. Some 120 working papers will be presented in both conferences. There will be 13 specialised workshops.
Al-Kuwari underlined that Qatar attaches great importance to renewable energy in the mixture of clean energy, indicating that Al-Kharsaah renewable energy plant will start production during the second quarter of 2022, with a production reaching 800 megawatts.
He pointed to the State's tendency to open other stations, in co-ordination with QatarEnergy to produce an additional 1,400 megawatts, as part of an ambitious plan to produce a mixture of low-carbon energies.
The General Conference of the Arab Union of Electricity, which opened earlier Sunday, is considered the largest Arab gathering to discuss issues and challenges facing the electricity sector in the region, and to explore prospects for joint Arab action.
The current edition is marked by the multiplicity of the events accompanying it, including the meetings of the 14th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, the 37th meeting of the Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Arab Union for Electricity, and the meeting of the General Assembly of the Arab Union for Electricity.
The conference is being held amidst increasing economic and environmental challenges facing the electric power sector in the Arab world, which prompt decision-makers and specialists in this vital sector to work on developing electric power systems to meet the needs of the population and the various economic sectors.
This edition is also characterised by a series of accompanying events and, most importantly is the exhibition of electrical equipment and supplies for the production, transmission and distribution of electricity in the Arab countries in its tenth edition, which was merged with the main exhibition of the conference.
The exhibition aims to develop and introduce this industry, as part of the continuous endeavor to support and encourage the local electrical industries and develop their businesses.
Among the most important topics on the agenda are the common Arab electricity market, which reflects a long process that began since 2001; and the shift towards green energy which was recently included on the agenda of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity.
Meanwhile, the hybrid SGRE 2022 will bring together experts, researchers and representatives of universities, institutes and the related industry from around the world to discuss ways to integrate smart grids with renewable energy resources in current energy systems.
The conference will discuss over three days the ongoing and future research on next-generation power electronics, and renewable energy technologies and applications through a number of seminars, workshops and public lectures that the conference will include in particular on contemporary industry topics that include smart grids, renewable energy, power electronics, control devices and manufacturing, in addition to communications and computer intelligence.
The 3rd International Conference on Smart Grid and Renewable Energy aims to set a long-term agenda for smart grid and renewable energy research by discussing the current smart grid technologies and the extent of their integration with renewable energy sources, thus contributing to the sustainability of energy resources, achieving economic growth, improving the social lifestyle and supporting the provision of a healthy and green environment.
The conference also works on spreading awareness of new industries, presenting the latest smart grid technologies and their benefits, and reviewing their challenges and how to overcome them.
The conference will focus in particular on the diversification of energy sources and how to improve investment in renewable energy and its integration with the smart grid and information and communication technology.
