Hassad, Qatar’s premier investor in food and agribusiness, has announced that Aswaq for Food Facilities Management (a subsidiary of Hassad) recently joined the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) as a premium member – making Qatar the first in the GCC region to join the WUWM.
Hassad chief executive Mohamed al-Sadah said: “We are pleased that Qatar is the first country in the Gulf region to join the World Federation of Wholesale Markets – through this membership, Aswaq will be able to access an international network of producers, distributors, suppliers, and wholesalers.”
WUWM secretary-general Eugenia Carrara commented during her visit to wholesale markets managed by Aswaq: “The food security strategy that the Qatar government deployed these past years, specially through Hassad, is remarkable – the modernisation of fresh food wholesale markets is a key component of it, and has proven already to be a big asset to support local production and strengthen the resilience of the perishable food supply chain.”
With the membership, Aswaq looks forward to benefit from the latest trends and discussions in the fresh food industry, and have access to online webinars about major issues related to wholesale and retail markets by experts in the sector.
The WUWM boasts of more than 220 members from 40 countries around the world, representing a group of global organisations concerned with food and fresh products.
The union aims to exchange experiences between institutions to contribute to achieving food security.
