The fruitful partnership between RGS Guildford Qatar and Education Above All (EAA) Foundation was highlighted at RGS during the biggest event for schools worldwide – World Book Day.
This year marks World Book Day’s 25th anniversary, and the message for all children is “You are a reader”.
The day aims to “promote reading for pleasure” while offering “every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own“.
While inspiring people to read more, their mission is also to reach children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
It focuses on the importance of reading in young people’s development and how reading more has an impact on future success.
World Book Day was an initiative started by the United Nations in 1995, and today schools around the world celebrate the occasion.
In a press statement, RGS said the inspirational part is how the pupils raised money to fund two disadvantaged schools in Qatar through the power of reading.
They raised the money by reading books: for every book the children read, their families would contribute money pledges to the EAA.
"To our astonishment, in just one week and a half, the children managed to raise a whopping QR25,966," the statement noted.
RGS Guildford's ethos and values stem from a rich history in education.
In 1552, King Edward VI ordered that RGS be established for all children, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Fast forward 500 years later, the same principles and values regarding children and education have been implemented by Education Above All.
The EAA has built two schools – named the Ihsan schools – for children who cannot afford formal schooling in Qatar.
"It is remarkable to note the parallels between the founding of RGS and the Education Above All initiated Ihsan schools in Qatar through 'The Together Project'," the statement adds. "RGS is proud to partner with Education Above All to empower the pupils of Ihsan schools and RGS through the gift of reading.”
"Our mission at RGS Qatar is to ensure that our pupils develop into lifelong learners,” the school said. “Our pupils have done an outstanding job reading at home and raising money for disenfranchised children in Qatar as part of Education Above All's 'The Together Project'."
"Reading is necessary for success and the development of a life-long passion for learning,” the school added. “We encourage our pupils to read throughout the year, and they were all moved when informed that their reading would assist other children in attending school."
