The Ministry of Culture's Qatar Center for Poetry in co-operation with Qatar University (QU) held yesterday a ceremony at Qatar National Convention Center to mark the finals of the Universities Poet competition featuring participants also from the civilian and military colleges.
A total of six winners, three each in Standard and Nabataean (colloquial) Arabic poetry, respectively, were crowned. The event was attended by QU president Dr Hassan Rashid al-Dirham, Minister of Culture's adviser Dr Ghanim bin Mubarak al-Ali, and the Qatar Center for Poetry director Shabib bin Arar al-Nuaimi and other dignitaries.



Al-Nuaimi stressed the importance of poetry for the Arabs and their culture and social lives and how they used poetry to record their daily activities and key events. He also stressed the importance of the competition in encouraging the aspiring talented young people and helping them to further enhance their skills and ways of expression.
Al-Nuaimi thanked the organiing committee for making the event a success, besides the efforts of board of juries and participating poets. He also thanked HE the Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Thani for sponsoring the event and giving all the support.
The winners of the first three places in the standard Arabic poetry category are Taha Mukhtar Hassan, Abdulla Ismail Ahmed al-Hussain, and Abdulwadud Edda, respectively. The first three winners for the Nabatean Arabic category are Abdulrhaman Salem al-Nuwaf, Issa bin Nasser al-Khalifa, and Abdulmuhseen Ali al-Mari, respectively.
Each of the winners recited his poem in front of the audience who applauded them. In addition, all the winners were given a 10-minute slot to improvise a short poem in his own category on Dar Al Kutub and its heritage, and recite it in front of the audience and juries. Accordingly, each of them gave his short poem and it was assessed by the jury while applauded by the audience.
The competitions, which started on January 31 saw participation of students from all the universities and colleges in Qatar and open to all residents talented in Arabic poetry. The value of the prizes amounted to QR180,000 for both categories. The annual event is aimed at enhancing the literary scene and activities in the country.
