The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Timipre Sylva called on the 6th Summit of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha to adopt a new approach that responds to the recent challenges witnessed by the global energy market under the impact of Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.
In a speech at the GECF opening session, the Minister said that this approach should take into account the modernisation of policies related to the natural gas industry and the adoption of technology and innovation and injecting appropriate investments in this industry as a way to modernise its infrastructure and develop carbon capture and storage technologies.
This approach requires co-operation, as the current summit is one of the important opportunities on the way to reaching it, The Minister said, stressing that discussing and exchanging views on the dynamics of the oil and gas market and the policies that constitute this sector is vital to energy security and the global economy and an important indicator to clarify the commitment of the GECF towards its goals.
He also affirmed that GECF's slogan "Natural Gas: Shaping the Future of Energy," comes at an appropriate time to move forward in the transitional phase (from fossil energy to clean energies), including renewable ones and natural gas to achieve stability in this market.
He called on GECF to monitor and evaluate the dynamics of the global energy market in the short and medium terms by addressing the various challenges it faces, stressing his country's commitment to its requirements through several initiatives and projects.
