The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) organised a workshop for local stakeholders to discuss ways of boosting recycling efforts ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The event was held at the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, in the precinct of Khalifa International Stadium, which will host matches during this year’s tournament.
The event focused on a range of recycling solutions – specifically in relation to eliminating any waste generated by plastic bottles. Participants included HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, who made opening remarks and renewed her commitment to raising awareness about the importance of sustainability. Opening remarks were also made by Bodour al-Meer, the SC’s Sustainability director.
In addition, presentations were made by Ahmad al-Sada, assistant undersecretary, and Jawaher al-Sulaiti, industrial engineer, at a Qatari ministry; Dr Talar Sahsuvaroglu, sustainability & environment expert, SC; Cynthia Karam Messarra, franchise director for Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Coca-Cola Middle East; and Mugurel Radulescu, waste management expert.

Later in the day, a workshop on plastic recycling was delivered by Orjan Lundberg, sustainability & environment expert, SC. The workshop identified pathways towards improved recycling, including recommendations on focus areas of standards, policy, technology, collection and awareness.
Al-Meer said. “Qatar 2022 has already played such a tremendous role in acting as a catalyst for greater implementation of sustainable thinking and practices across the country. In many ways, we are setting new benchmarks for the way mega sporting events can leave a positive legacy for the environment – and the recycling of plastic bottles is at the heart of our efforts.
“With plastic making up a significant percentage of the world’s waste, it is important for us to take an event the size of the FIFA World Cup to act as a pivot for recycling culture in the country and use it as an incentive to develop this area and leave a positive legacy for generations to come.”
