The Research and Graduate Studies Sector at Qatar University (QU) organised the first Winter Research Internship Programme in December 2021.
The programme aims to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to develop their research skills.
Students were introduced to the programme at the official launch event, which was attended by Dr Nasser Abdullah AlNuaimi, associate vice-president for Research and Graduate Studies, who presented the opening speech at the event.
In addition, the audience included directors of the participating research centres, faculty members, mentors and participating students.
Dr Abdelbary Elhissi, director of the Office of Research Planning and Development at QU, also addressed the students in his welcome speech. Dr Bassem Shomar, manager of Research Excellence, presented to the students information about the impact of research internships on students and institutions. Dr Mohamed Maqbool, section head of Research Quality, explained the internship guidelines to students.
Ten research centres at QU participated in the event, including the Centre for Advanced Materials, Environmental Science Centre, Biomedical Research Centre, Laboratory Animals Research Centre, Central Laboratories Unit, Qatar University Young Scientists Centre, Social & Economic Survey Research Institute, Ibn Khaldon Center for Humanities & Social Sciences, Qatar University Press and the Graduate Learning Support section. These centres co-operated to create a list of 10 training courses for the programme according to their research areas.
The number of students who applied for and showed interest in the programme was "overwhelmingly high, and it was a successful experience due to the co-operation of the directors, mentors and staff of the respective centres", a press statement noted. The internship programme included 116 interns from different nationalities and colleges at QU.
The Research and Graduate Studies Sector establishes periodical research programmes in order to foster the culture of scientific research among undergraduate and graduate-level students, and enhance their participation in research activities. The Winter Research Internship Programme is considered a significant step in the QU Strategy 2018-2022, and a step forward to develop and enrich the research culture within students, towards building a knowledge-based society in Qatar.
