*Transparency CPI: Qatar 2nd among Gulf, Arab countries
Qatar achieved 63 points on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which made it ranked second in the Gulf and Arab countries, and 31st among the 180 countries and territories included in the index.
The results emerged in the Transparency International CPI for the year 2021.
The index draws its data from a number of indicators issued by reputable international organisations, such as the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) issued by the International Development Institute, the World Economic Forum, Bertelsmann Foundation, the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Patterns of Democracy project, the Country and Sector Risk Handbook of Political Risk Services.
The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories according to their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and businesses, uses a scale from zero to 100, with zero being the most corrupt and 100 the most transparent.
In order to maintain the leadership of Qatar and enhance its position, as it stands among the most transparent countries in the world, the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority has taken many steps to enhance integrity, transparency and prevent corruption, including the completion of the draft national strategy for integrity, transparency and corruption prevention (2022 - 2026) in co-operation and co-ordination with the authorities related to the integrity, transparency, prevention and control of corruption in the country. In preparing the strategy, the Authority relied on a set of national, regional and international references, including the permanent constitution of the Qatar and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
The Authority also proposed many projects and procedures to enhance integrity and transparency, in implementation of the requirements of the UN Convention against Corruption, including the law on combating conflicts of interest, given that the issue of addressing conflicts of interest is one of the basic matters that help in combating corruption in the country, in addition to the law regulating the right to access information, as the right to access information is one of the basic principles of human rights, as it is guaranteed by most international conventions.
Qatar attaches great importance to promoting transparency and integrity, and the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority has taken great efforts that led it to occupy advanced international centres, foremost of which is the development of educational and training programmes to educate state employees, especially employees of financial institutions, and train them to use advanced methods to detect corruption and prepare them to co-operate with Authority in this field.
The state's interest is not limited to applying the best international standards and practices in the areas of transparency, integrity and prevention of corruption, but at the same time is interested in supporting international efforts in this field within the framework of co-operation with relevant international organisations, including the International Anti-Corruption Academy, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and other relevant international organisations.
