Prestige Computer Services (PCS), a new initiative by StudyPlus Education Group, has embarked on a mission to reduce electronic waste in Qatar.
The company upgrades and resells high-quality laptops, desktops, monitors and peripherals with warranty at the "most affordable
prices" with free delivery options across Qatar, according to a press statement.
Prestige Computer Services recently inaugurated a brand-new showroom with over 500 high-end upgraded laptops and desktops, available for leasing and resale purposes, at Al Mirqab Mall.
"As tech-hungry customers loaded with cash get ready to upgrade to the next generation of lightning-fast electronic devices, what happens to the discarded ones and where do most of them end up? Simple, into the trash. Electronic devices have always produced waste, but the level of discarded devices has increased rapidly in recent years, forming mountains of obsolete gadgets worldwide," the statement noted.
The pallets of once loved but now outdated devices fill the landfills daily with toxic electronic waste, such as mercury, lead and beryllium, posing one of the largest environmental risks the world faces. “These toxins seep out into the soil and water, contaminating both, and presenting a serious health hazard for all living species,” said Mohamed al-Amri, chairman of PCS.
While briefing on the company’s policies, Yogita Goyal, the co-founder of PCS, said: “In our society, we always want to have the new and the best product. Whenever we buy something new, we get rid of what’s old, and the environment pays the price for our wants.”
That cycle of consumption has made electronics waste the world’s fastest-growing solid-waste stream. “I don’t think people understand the magnitude of the problem. As per the World Health Organisation, in 2019 alone, the world produced 53.6 mega tonnes of e-waste, an average of 7.3kg per capita. Less than a quarter of all electronic waste is recycled, while the rest is burned up to carbonise the planet or ends up in landfills," she added.
One solution is to make electronics last as long as they once did. “Our products today don’t last as long as they used to, and it’s a strategy by manufacturers to force us into shorter upgrade cycles, building a compulsive tendency to just throw away these products,” says co-founder and executive manager Pradeep Singhal. "The growing amount of e-waste is mainly fuelled by higher consumption, shorter life cycles, and fewer upgrade options and this is where Prestige Computer Services Qatar serves the need," he added.
