Qatar's National Covid-19 Vaccination Programme has reached another milestone as more than half a million booster doses have been administered in the country so far.
According to data published by the Ministry of Public Health Tuesday, a total of 514,708 booster doses have been given in the country so far.
Overall, 5,479,206 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the country since the start of the programme, with 31,928 doses given in the past 24 hours. The MoPH data also showed that 86.8% of the total population are now fully vaccinated with two doses.
Anyone aged 12 years and above who had their second dose more than six months ago is eligible for the booster dose.
"Protect yourself, your family and community; get your booster dose when you become eligible," the ministry stressed.
"Clinical evidence shows that the booster dose provides around 75% protection against mild to moderate infection and more than 90% protection against severe infection or death," the MoPH said in a related infographic, explaining how effective the vaccine is. "Additionally, almost all patients admitted to intensive care units are either unvaccinated or had their second dose of the vaccine more than six months ago, and had not received their booster dose."
Covid-19 booster doses are being administered at all 28 Primary Health Care Corporation health centres as well as the Qatar Vaccination Centre for Business and Industry in Bu Garn.
Answering a query on whether a person who has received the vaccine booster dose can still contract Covid-19, the ministry said vaccines reduce the risk of catching Covid-19 but do not completely prevent one from getting it. "But they do significantly reduce the chances of getting severe infection and becoming very sick or dying. Fully vaccinated people are likely to experience only mild symptoms if infected."
