Tributes have poured in paying homage to HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalid bin Hamad bin Abdullah al-Thani, who passed away on Monday.
Local media reported that HE Sheikh Mohammed occupied various key roles in the world of Qatari sport. He was the president of Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar Football Association, and Qatar Chess Federation.
HE Sheikh Mohamed became the president of Qatar Olympic Committee in 1991, and it was under his leadership that the country won its first ever Olympic medal during the 1992 games in Barcelona. It was also the first medal for a Gulf athlete in the Olympics.
During his tenure as president of the Football Association which began in 1988, Qatar won the eleventh Arabian Gulf Cup.
