The new plan of the joint committee to remove abandoned vehicles and equipment in the country for 2022, will include a suggestion to offer a tender for companies to export abandoned vehicles that are no longer fit for use, local Arabic daily Arrayah has learnt.
Knowledgeable sources have told the daily that currently seized abandoned vehicles are taken to dedicated impound yards and some of their owners come forward to pay the due fines and claim them back.
However, some vehicles remain unclaimed and are sold at auctions as vehicles unfit for use. In such cases, some people buy these vehicles and take whatever spare parts they require from them and discard the vehicles again. Eventually, they end up as abandoned vehicles again in different areas of the country, and the committee has to remove them again.
As next year will be a special one due to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, it requires more intensive efforts and a special focus from Doha Municipality due to the population density and large number of vehicles present, the report stated.
Meanwhile, the daily said that the joint committee has been restructured to include more entities, including the Supreme Judiciary Council, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and the General Authority of Customs. This will enhance the operations of the committee and further facilitate its work in the coming stages.
Each entity will have its representative on the committee, which also includes the Ministry of Interior's General Directorate of Traffic, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) and the Ministry of Municipality.

According to the sources, the number of abandoned vehicles removed across the country in 2021 amounts to some 20,000, with 1,298 vehicles reclaimed by their owners after paying the stipulated fines.
