President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid appointed HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani and Denmark's Permanent Representative Ambassador Bille Hermann to lead the facilitation of informal negotiations on the reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in accordance with General Assembly resolutions. The resolutions call for reform of the Council in terms of equitable representation, increase in the number of its members and other matters.
This appointment would provide an opportunity for Member States to begin consultations on issues related to Security Council reform in a timely manner. HE Sheikha Alya and Sweden's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Joanna Monica were previously appointed last year by President of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkir to facilitate negotiations and consultations on Security Council reform.
The appointment of HE Sheikha Alya to this mission comes in recognition of Qatar's role in the UN, its belief in the principle of multilateralism, and its keenness to develop the international organisation's work mechanisms to achieve its goals, including reforming the work of the Security Council.
