Qatar Charity (QC) is carrying out roads and infrastructure restoration and maintenance work in 29 camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Idlib and Aleppo in northern Syria, to protect the IDPs from the repercussions of winter.
This comes under Qatar Charity’s IDPs camps’ Restoration project, and in line with its winter campaign ‘Warmth and Peace’. Through the current initiative, QC aims to respond to the dire humanitarian conditions that Syrian IDPs are suffering during the winter season.
Qatar Charity is set to deliver the restored roads before the rainy season to protect the IDPs, as the rain blocks roads leading to the camp. QC has so far completed the restoration of roads surrounding eight camps in the countryside of Idlib, and is set to start working on an additional 21 camps.
In the first phase of the project, Qatar Charity delivered rainwater and sewage drains, which were connected to nearby valleys, before construction works began.
Initially, QC carried out a humanitarian assessment to identify the camps in need. Then, a topographical survey of selected camps was conducted to identify the requirements and intervention mechanisms to carry out the necessary operations.
Ziad Ahmed, director of Tal Fakhar camp in the Idlib countryside, said it was difficult to bring drinking water and food supplies during the winter due to the mud, which prevented vehicles from entering the camp, in addition to severe difficulties in accessing healthcare
“The project has transformed the roads, making it easier for the displaced to access services, and facilitating the entry of vehicles carrying water and aid into the camp," said Mohamed Abu Hashem, director of the Badr Al-Hass camp.
Syrian IDPs have also expressed relief at the roads and infrastructure maintenance works carried out in their camps. A 75-year-old displaced woman, Fawza al-Abdullah, said the first rainfall at the beginning of last month had no adverse impact on the IDPs due to the camps rehabilitation project implemented by Qatar Charity for them. “The rainfall of each winter made the grounds of the IDPs camp muddy, preventing them from getting out of their tents,” she noted.
As an extremely cold winter is approaching, QC has urged the people of Qatar to support its ‘Warmth and Peace’ campaign to reach out to as many vulnerable people as possible in the harsh winter season.
