QatarDebate, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, is organising the second US universities Arabic debate championship, hosted by the University of Chicago, with the participation of 34 of the most prestigious universities in America.
The championship will be contested by 150 debaters representing 40 teams from 34 universities, and will run for three days.
Moderated by 60 judges the championship sessions will cover an array of comprehensive and objective debate topics considering the American context in some cases.
Prior to the championship, QatarDebate has executed an intense training programme in Arabic for native and non-native speakers in an effort to prepare participants for the competition.
Some workshops conducted specifically to judges were sectioned into two groups to accommodate their busy schedules.
Debate instructor at QatarDebate Nadia Darwish said that "during the training sessions we covered many aspects including the mechanism of selecting winners, how to defend a score and distinguishing between justification and feedback through testing judges to measure their understanding and pinpointing their strengths and weaknesses.
"The sessions include judging debates and builds on techniques provided by instructors through a special workshop showcasing results and feedback to avoid common mistakes during the competition and to manage the first rounds in high levels of professionalism."
The first edition of the championship was organised at Harvard University in 2019. (QNA)
