Rajendra Kumar Sharma is a prominent member of the Nepalese community in Qatar who is earning name and fame through his enterprise and social work.
The secretary of Non-Resident Nepalese Association-International Co-ordination Committee (NRNA-ICC), an umbrella organisation of Nepalese diaspora across more than 80 countries, he is also the vice-president of Nepalese Businessmen Association (NBA) - Qatar.
A longtime businessman in Qatar, Sharma has been active in promoting sports, arts, and culture of the Nepalese community in the region through several organisations. During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, he has been instrumental in providing medical and other support to needy Nepalese workers.
For Sharma, fulfilling a social responsibility gives him satisfaction. He is also investing a portion of his income on philanthropic activities and acknowledges the support provided by Qatar and her people. “I am fortunate in having connection with the generous and supportive people of Qatar."
He believes that across the world, Nepalese are perceived as brave sons and daughters of the Gorkhali tribe. In Qatar, too, Nepalese are a respected community and getting excellent care. In his capacity as secretary of NRNA, Sharma pointed out that the organisation has provided assistance to around 170,000 Nepalese living in different countries. NRNA is helping Non-Resident Nepalese in association with respective national co-ordination councils. The beneficiaries were from over 300 cities from 50 countries.
"We have helped those who became unemployed, forced to return home, women, people with disabilities, and people with special conditions. In doing so, we mobilised 500 non-resident doctors. We are planning to establish oxygen plants in seven provinces back home. The Qatar chapter has supported this initiative overwhelmingly.
"On May 15, 2021, we donated 560 oxygen cylinders to help Nepal during a shortage caused by Covid-19. The campaign was mostly supported by NRN in the Middle East region under my co-ordination," Sharma said.
The NBA-Qatar is an umbrella organisation of Nepalese enterprises in Qatar. The other rationale of NBA is to bring the businesses of Qatar and Nepal closer for bilateral investments and to promote trade relations. NBA works as an interlocutor between Qatar Chamber and Nepal Chamber of Commerce. "We closely work with both the organisations to promote the flow of trade and investment between the two countries. We closely tie up with the Nepalese embassy to conduct several awareness programmes."
According to Sharma, due to the favourable business climate, the number of Nepalese enterprises are flourishing each year. "Most of the Nepalese opt for construction. Besides, there are dozens of restaurants in Doha serving authentic Nepalese cuisine. Many are into real estate, and others into retail shops. Nepalese are trading in cashmere, green groceries and tea. Women are active in tailoring, and in the beauty and cosmetic businesses," said Sharma. He also revealed that he will soon complete his tenure as NRNA-ICC secretary soon.
"Due to the pandemic, many of my tasks are pending. I have already declared my candidacy for the vice-president of the organisation. The tenure, if I am elected, will help me to finish the remaining tasks. I will focus my attention on the issues of migrant labourers in the Middle East, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan and Africa. Besides, I will lobby for dual citizenship for non-resident Nepalese, utilisation and investment of remittance, tourism promotion, welfare of British Gurkha soldiers, and identification of Nepalese experts scattered across the world to help rebuild the country, and to create an ambiance in which all Nepalese across the globe would feel ownership in the Association.”
