The Shura Council held its first ordinary session of the first legislative term yesterday, corresponding to the Shura Council's 50th annual session, headed by HE Abdul Rahman Yousuf Abdul Rahman al-Khulaifi.
In a speech at the opening session, HE al-Khulaifi welcomed the members of the Shura Council, wishing the council success and to continue performing its duty in serving the country and citizens under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
It was followed by HE Secretary-General of the Shura Council Dr Ahmed bin Nasser Ibrahim al- Fadhala reading Decree No. 48 of 2021, inviting the Shura Council to hold the first ordinary session of the first legislative term, corresponding to the Council's 50th annual session, and the members taking the oath.
The Shura Council members voted to select HE Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim as Speaker for this legislative term and HE Dr Hamda bint Hassan al-Sulaiti as Deputy Speaker, in accordance with the provisions of Article 93 of the Constitution.
HE the Speaker delivered a speech in which he extended his sincere thanks and appreciation for the confidence the members placed in him.
He pointed out that the Amir's speech carried deep meanings and stressed that it was a comprehensive speech that drew the internal and foreign policy of Qatar that must be adopted by all, whether by the executive or the legislative body represented in the Shura Council and to work to achieve what the wise leadership aspires to.
HE al-Ghanim indicated that the council is at a very important stage in its history, emphasising the need to assume responsibility through solidarity and work in a spirit of brotherhood for the sake of serving the country and citizens.
He expressed his aspiration to work with the members and cooperate with the government in order to achieve prosperity and Qatar to reach advanced positions, and indicated that being the first elected council requires the members to be careful and work to make this experiment a success.
For her part, HE the Deputy Speaker Dr Hamda bint Hassan al-Sulaiti thanked the members for the trust they placed in her, indicating that from this new position, she will work diligently and through cooperation of all the members serve the country and achieve Qatar National Vision 2030.
She pointed out that her selection as Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council is a step that empowers Qatari women by trusting in their abilities and professional and practical capabilities, which is an important achievement and a source of pride.
