Indonesian ambassador Ridwan Hassan delivered a lecture on 'Indonesia’s Diplomacy and its Policy on Science' at Northwestern University in Qatar (NUQ) recently.
Speaking before the Liberal Arts students at NU-Q, the envoy stressed how science has become a cornerstone of Indonesia’s policy ever since the colonial era.
Indonesia has strengthened its science policy, among others, by establishing the National Research and Innovation Agency or BRIN.
The agency will co-ordinate all research conducted by government bodies and universities, and is intended to make national research more efficient and better able to serve Indonesia’s economic development policies.
“Science by nature should not stop in the laboratory only, instead it should reach our real life” he said.
Hassan cited the significant contribution of science in the diplomatic arena. As such, Indonesia is a good example when the country actively negotiated the concept of an “archipelagic state”, he said. In the negotiation, Indonesian diplomats work hand in hand with scientists on introducing as well as justifying the concept of "archipelagic waters", the envoy added.
