Cyrine Cherif started the new season in style after clinching the Medium Tour title on the opening day of the fifth season of the Longines Hathab Qatar Equestrian Tour on Friday.
At Qatar Equestrian Federation’s (QEF) Indoor Arena, Cherif and her 10-year-old stallion Brennus Villelongue put on a splendid show, galloping into fastest time of 32.13 seconds with no faults. The pair had earlier recorded a time of 25.33 secs in the opening phase. Frenchwoman Cherif took home QR7,000 in prize money.
Jaber Rashid al-Amri, astride Canavaro De Muze (E.T.), was second with a time of 32.93 secs. Salmeen Sultan al-Suwaidi who was in the saddle of Guilder's Empire Of The Sun was third in a time of 33.20 secs.
Zorro Z, ridden by Salman Mohamed al-Emadi (34.38 secs), and Casmir's Son with Faleh Suwead al-Ajami in the saddle (31.12) completed the top five in the individual event, which saw a strong field of 34 entries.
Meanwhile, Cherif and Brennus Villelongue played a major role in ExxonMobil’s win in the team event yesterday. Team ExxonMobil, which also included Saeed Nasser al-Qadi (Electra B) and Rashid Towaim al-Marri (Lamm Addiction Z), clocked a time of 69.02 secs to bag the top prize of the day, worth QR15,000.
Team Al Kass (69.87 secs) finished second. Jaber Rashid al-Amri (Canavaro De Muze E.T.) and Ghanim Nasser al-Qadi (Happy Tina) were the fastest in their team which also included Nasser al-Ghazali (What A Pleasure).
Team QAF, which included another two popular Qatari riders, Salman Mohamed al-Emadi (Zorro Z) and Mohamed Abdulla Juma (Lucratief), came third with a collective time of 76.19 secs.
Earlier, the popular series kicked off with the Small Tour competition which was eventually won by young rider Mohamed Nasser al-Qadi who guided his 11-year-old gelding in a flawless routine.
Al Qadi, who hails from a family of exceptional riders, claimed the maiden podium win of the Longines Hathab season after seeing off his closest rival Khalid Mohamed Al Emadi (Hermes Van De Meersen) by just two seconds following a ride that lasted for 24.46 secs. Baina, ridden by Mohamed Jabor Al Naimi was the third fastest (24.63 secs).
The opening round of the 14-leg series concludes today with Future Riders (Individual and teams), Future Riders Class (For u-14 and beginners), Open Class and Big Tour events taking place at the same venue.
Hathab, meaning “canter” in Arabic, is a brainchild of H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee. The annual Equestrian Tour is organised and hosted jointly by QEF and Al Shaqab.
