The College of Medicine at Qatar University (QU CMED) celebrated the graduation of its first batch of 46 graduates, 65% of whom are females, at the graduation ceremony of the university’s 44th batch that was held Monday.
A group of 42 of the college's graduates has been selected to join Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to complete their postgraduate medical residency training programme, which includes 13 different specialties and is internationally accredited.
Vice Dean of the College of Medicine Dr Marwan Abu-Hijleh said that the first batch of graduates represents an accomplishment and an international reference that grants the college confidence in its educational outcomes, and boosts the graduates' confidence in the quality of education.
He added that this achievement also enhances Qatar’s healthcare system.
Dr Abu-Hijleh said that despite the challenges imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, the global situation provided opportunities for medical institutions and hospitals in Qatar, as well as all around the world, to develop and thrive.
He explained that although QU CMED students were not able to practice the usual field training in hospitals during the first few months, they made up for this during the following summer, when they received their clinical training.
Dr Abu-Hijleh added that the pandemic has given them the opportunity to expand their knowledge in the field of infectious diseases, as well as identify viruses and conduct extensive research on them, providing them with additional experience on how to deal with any future pandemics.
He also noted that 115 students have been accepted this year, and stressed that there has been an increase in the number of college applications since the college was established.
