On October 2, the social science department of Birla Public School spearheaded cheerful celebrations on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the International Day of Non-Violence.
The virtual event was compered by Middle School students, Fathima Iqra and Elsa Thomas.
A formal rendition of the Indian National Anthem marked the beginning of the function. “We must be the change that we want to see in the world” – the famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi was narrated and its relevance today was enumerated by Hazel Liz Joy of class 12th, while she welcomed the audience.
The school choir also performed
Principal A P Sharma highlighted the achievements of the Father of the Indian Nation and Gandhi’s principles of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha.
The function proceeded further with a dance performance, crafted as a tribute to the Mahatma.
School chairman Gope Sahani urged the students to adopt the principles of Gandhi and practice them. Director Luckose K Chacko reminded all of the importance of non-violence in the present scenario, and how pertinent Bapu’s principles are today.
The flavour of the freedom movement was added by a skit ‘Paladin of Truth’ directed by the teachers of social science department. The contributions of Mahatma Gandhi were recalled through a speech by Aainaar, a student of the Secondary School. A documentary video, collated by teacher Shyam Mohan showcased Bapu’s contributions to the freedom struggle. A vote of thanks was delivered by the Student Council cultural secretary Kevin Sijoy.
