Maharashtra Mandal Qatar (MMQ) organised recently the Maharashtrian Food & Cultural Fiesta 2021 at the Indian Cultural Centre ( ICC).
The event was a unique initiative under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav: India @75” celebrations in Qatar. Indian ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal and his wife Dr Alpna Mittal were the chief guests on the occasion. Limited guests from the Embassy of India, apex body presidents, few community leaders, dignitaries from MMQ community were invited considering current Covid-19 protocols and restrictions. Rest of the MMQ members and others were connected through YouTube and Facebook Live.
The guests were accorded a grand traditional Maharashtrian welcome through a Lazim dance by MMQ members.
In his presidential address, Sanjay Patil elaborated the journey of MMQ since its inception. MMQ conducted various cultural, educational and philanthropical events and activities including repatriation support and notable contribution to the embassy’s Heal India Campaign during the second wave of Covid-19 in India. He also expressed sincere gratitude for the support received from the Embassy of India, ICBF and ICC while carrying out the initiatives.
The ambassador appreciated the initiatives of MMQ and for arranging such an event. He also emphasised the contribution of freedom fighters from Maharashtra towards India’s independence. He highlighted the contribution of Mumbai, the financial capital of India in the national economy, making it the fifth largest in the world. He also commended the contribution of MMQ towards their community.
There was a Maharashtrian cultural programme at the event. Maharashtrian traditional ladies group dance “Mangala Gaur” was performed, followed by an energetic Koli dance and the traditional gracious Lavanee. Finally, the young boys presented a tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
There was also an exhibition of paintings as well as a Food Stalls Exhibition covering about 24 different delicious cuisines from almost every sub-region of Maharashtra. Sushant Savardekar, general secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
