England marked their return to Wembley for the first time since their Euro 2020 final heartbreak by seeing off minnows Andorra 4-0 yesterday to preserve their perfect World Cup qualifying record.
Manager Gareth Southgate changed the entire starting XI following his side’s comfortable 4-0 win in Hungary in midweek - the first time England had changed every player since 1982. But the home side still had far too much quality for 156th-ranked Andorra, even though they struggled to turn their dominance into goals on a warm September afternoon.
Jesse Lingard scored twice and substitute Harry Kane netted from the spot before a late goal from Bukayo Saka as England made it five wins from five matches in Group I on the road to Qatar 2022.
Despite the wholesale changes England quickly settled into a pattern of domination in London. Manchester United forward Lingard, out of favour at Old Trafford, opened the scoring in the 18th minute, controlling a deflected Saka cross before finishing with his left foot. He then raced to the corner and performed Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark spin-and-jump goal celebration in honour of his new clubmate.
England were frustrated for the rest of the first half, unable to cut through a packed Andorra defence, who disrupted the hosts with a series of fouls.
Mount was bundled over in the box after fine work from Grealish and Kane made no mistake from the spot, doubling the lead in the 72nd minute. Lingard had his second goal of the game six minutes later, beating Josep Gomes with a right-footed shot from the left of the area. Saka - another birthday boy - scored England’s fourth as the scoreboard finally reflected their total dominance of the game.
Bale hat-trick gives Wales dramatic win over Belarus
Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick, including a 93rd-minute winner, as Wales fought back to beat Belarus 3-2 on Sunday in World Cup qualifying. The victory was Wales’ second in three games in Group E and moves them up to third, one point behind the second-placed Czech Republic with a game in hand. The group winners qualify automatically for the 2022 finals in Qatar with the runners-up heading into the play-offs.
Bale, who has broken back into the Real Madrid team this season under Carlo Ancelotti, gave the nominal visitors a fifth-minute lead from the penalty spot in Kazan.
The game was being played in Russia due to EU and UK sanctions against the Belarusian government. But Lokomotiv Moscow’s Vitali Lisakovich levelled with a spot-kick just before the half-hour mark, and then set up Pavel Sedko to turn the game on its head a minute later.
Wales had to be patient in the second period, only equalising in the 69th minute through another Bale penalty.
Cardiff City youngster Mark Harris, making his debut as a substitute, caused havoc in the Belarus defence in stoppage time, with his shot saved by Sergei Chernik.
But the ball eventually found its way to Bale and his snap-shot squirmed under the body of the Belarus goalkeeper to spark wild Welsh celebrations.
France draw again as Dutch roll in
World Cup holders France stuttered again in their bid to qualify for the 2022 finals in Qatar after a 1-1 draw in Ukraine, while Memphis Depay inspired the Netherlands to a rout of Montenegro on
Saturday. France drew their fifth successive match as Anthony Martial scored his first international goal in five years to earn Didier Deschamps’ side a point in Kyiv.
Meanwhile Depay led the Netherlands to a 4-0 defeat of Montenegro in Eindhoven that kept Louis van Gaal’s team right behind Group G leaders Turkey, who won 3-0 in Gibraltar.
Barcelona star Depay opened the scoring for the Dutch with a penalty and netted a second on the hour. Captain Georginio Wijnaldum added a slick third and Cody Gakpo bagged his first goal for the national team with a terrific curling shot.
