The Supervisory Committee of the Shura Council elections has issued an advisory against cyber risk that includes guidelines for the candidate's technical team managing the campaign to adopt secure cybersecurity practices. The guidebook also aims to raise their awareness on related topics and issues.
Local Arabic daily 'Arrayah' reported that the guidebook included a number of necessary technical standards to secure the involved election data, stressing the need to prepare the candidate's communication channels, whether it's the official websites of the candidates or their accounts in social media. It also seeks to maintain a control and develop an early warning system to detect and address fraudulent information.
Further, the guidebook recommends the preparation of a response plan for emergency incidents and continuing with the work in such circumstances, counteracting any potential cyberattacks in this regard. The guidebook offers the candidate a number of questions that would help in knowing to what degree his/her election campaign would be ready to thwart any cyber risks.
The guidebook recommended that each candidate adopt a distinctive visual identity for all the related online communication channels, accounts and platform to make it easier for the voters to connect with them. In the meantime, members of the technical team should be well-qualified and trustworthy persons, making agreements and contacts with them based on well-defined and clear non-disclosure and confidentiality of information and data, in addition to the terms and conditions related to avoiding competition.
