Science India Forum (SIF) Qatar, under the patronage of the Indian embassy in Qatar, recently celebrated the birth anniversary of Padma Vibhushan Dr Vikram Sarabhai.
The event was organised under the theme 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', as a part of celebration of India's 75 years of independence.
SIF Qatar president Dipak Dahake welcomed the dignitaries and presented a brief report on 26 activities conducted during the Covid-19 lockdown including participation in the International Chemistry Olympiad 2021 as part of the Qatar national team.
In the inaugural address, chief guest Angeline Premalatha, counsellor (political & commerce), embassy of India, lauded the efforts and activities by SIF Qatar for students as well as the scientific community. She reiterated that celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr Sarabhai, the 'Father of the Indian space programme' is the best homage for his great achievements and contribution in national development.
Indian ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal in his video message highlighted the great contributions by Dr Sarabhai in space and nuclear sciences. He also applauded the achievements of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for various successful space missions and launching satellites not only for India but also for the world.
Guest of honour Jayant Sahasrabuddhe said it is a proud moment to celebrate and remember great scientists on their birth anniversary. Eminent scientist Sudheer Kumar, director, Capacity Building Programme Office, ISRO HQ (Bengaluru) delivered the keynote speech on “India’s Space Mission & Facilities”.
Guest of honour Dr Essam Heggy, chief scientist of Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute at Qatar Foundation and the research director of its newly-established Earth Science Programme, presented projects and explorations taken up on regional changes in deserts and robotics mission at Nasa.
Based on the event theme and talks by the speakers, an online app based quiz was conducted. Hiranmayi Vijaykumar, Gowri Hariprasad, Vishnu Nalil Vallapil and Lavanya Kadappully Baiju were the winners.
SIF Qatar also conducted an online orientation programme on Qatar Children’s Science Congress (QCSC-2021) for students and guide teachers.
The Children's Science Congress is conducted by the department of science and technology, government of India, with an objective to encourage children to explore, think, learn by doing and imbibe in them a scientific temperament.
Dr Lalit Sharma, a science communicator and chairman of National Academic Committee of Children’s Science Congress, conducted an interactive session.
Over 100 students and teachers from different schools attended. Those who missed these, can access the recorded session on SIF Qatar YouTube Channel. Registration for the QCSC is free and closing soon. Students are encourage to register on www.sifq.org
