The actual jurisdiction of the Shura Council and the designated tasks and duties of the members are considered the best guide for the upcoming elections, a number of Qatari citizens and experts in the field have affirmed. Speaking to local Arabic daily 'Arrayah', they pointed out that the voters should have a clear view and understanding of their programmes and make sure that it falls within the jurisdiction of the council and serve the public interests of the country rather than promoting promises that could be considered outside the jurisdiction of the council in the first place.
The jurisdiction and tasks of the upcoming elected council include introducing laws and legislations, approving the public budget of the state, and control over the executive authorities of the country, according to the Qatari constitution. Besides, the Shura Council members could question and investigate the officials to clarify certain internal affairs within the jurisdiction of the council. They further stressed that the job of the elected members of the Shura Council does not in any way offer personal services to others or promoting their requests but rather address the issues of public interest.
Lawyer Ali Rashid al-Buainain said that the voters should go for those candidates who are able to serve the nation without any personal interests. He explained that the main purpose of voting for a certain candidate is to further promote public good and serve the country as a whole. It does not involve responding to the particular personal demands of individuals.
Lawyer Saif al-Ameri that the voters' clear understanding of the real jurisdiction and duties of the council and its members facilitates the choice of members who are more suitable and fit to undertake such tasks based on their professional public profiles. Yousef al-Jassim called on the voters to study well the public achievements of the candidates and review them within the requirements of the job before making a decision on whom to vote for. Besides, the candidates should be keen to maintain active communication with the voters to explain their vision.
Habib al-Hajiri suggested launching more active social forums and dialogue with the candidates at the various constituencies ahead of the voting process to give a platform to explain their views and what they can offer. This would reflect positively on the overall selection process.
