HE the Assistant Foreign Minister and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater met with Canadian Assistant Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Sandra McCardell via videoconference in the presence of ambassador of Canada to Qatar Stefanie McCollum. The meeting reviewed the bilateral relations, the achievements of Qatar and Canada and the importance of mutual co-operation.
The two sides touched on the political situation in the region, mainly the Palestinian issue and the importance of realising stability in the region for its significance to the world as a whole. The meeting also discussed the Afghan negotiations taking place in Doha, for which the Canadian side wished success and appreciated the Qatari efforts exerted in this regard.
In another context, the two sides highlighted the efforts made by both countries in the field of combating climate change. HE AlKhater noted the efforts of Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) in this regard, and Qatar's contribution of $100mn which was announced by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in 2019 to support island and small states to deal with climate change.
On the other hand, minister McCardell expressed Canada's anticipation to the FIFA World Cup 2022, and the possibility of benefiting from the experience of Qatar in this field, as Canada, the United States of America and Mexico will host the World Cup in 2026. Concluding the meeting, the two sides affirmed the importance of promoting the investment and economic sector between the two countries, especially in light of Qatar's plans to diversify the economy and attract foreign investments.
