Al Sailiya Central Market has seen a considerable turnout of customers ahead of the Eid al-Adha holidays as demand has picked up for fresh vegetables and fruits.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported the market has an abundant supply of excellent quality farm produce under one roof and that too at reasonable prices with the exception of tomatoes, onions and potatoes.
Increasing demand has pushed up the prices of tomatoes to QR35 for a 7kg box, potatoes to QR35 for a 15kg sack, and onions also to QR35 for a 20kg sack.
All other vegetables and fruits are available at reasonable prices. The market is fully air-conditioned, which helps in keeping the products on display fresh for longer periods and simultaneously help customers and sellers feel comfortable.
The security officers at the market are prompt in monitoring the entry and exit process, with special focus on maintaining the preventive and precautionary measures against any potential spread of Covid-19, especially before allowing any one into the market.
Some customers told Arrayah that Al Sailiya Central Market is one of their main shopping destinations for vegetables and fruits as the products are fresh and prices reasonable.
Issa Saeed al-Rashid was of the view that all prices are affordable except for some items due to the seasonal production. He said many households prefer to buy their needs ahead of the Eid holidays so they would not have to go shopping during the Eid days and enjoy time with their families.
Nasser al-Hajiri noted that he has seen adequate quantities of fruits and vegetables ahead of the Eid holidays and many customers know that the prices would be usually governed by the law of supply and demand and subject to change more often than other types of products. However, he pointed out that prices at the market are usually lower than other shopping outlets because customers buy in bulk and not by weight at a per kg rate.
Hamad al-Marri said that the prices of tomatoes, potatoes and onions have increased due to the increasing demand ahead of the Eid holidays as these are considered among the basic ingredients of cooking.
