Mall of Qatar (MoQ) recently hosted an art exhibition organised by Al-Jumeliyah Girls' Forum, part of Al-Jumeliyah Youth Centre, under the umbrella of the Ministry of Culture and Sports with the support of the Department of International Studies and Affairs at the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Drug Enforcement, and AlReyada Girls Centre.
The exhibition aimed to shed light on the drug issue and creatively raise awareness of the new generations by displaying portraits and paintings created by children, allowing them a free space to express ideas and thoughts creatively, the MoQ said in a statement.
Al-Jumeliyah Youth Centre director Khalifa al-Shahwani said: “We thank Mall of Qatar for supporting this awareness initiative and collaborating with our centre.”
“This reaffirms the mall’s effort to host various exhibitions on the environment, sport, history and social topics in line with its social responsibility programmes to raise awareness on issues of great interest to the community,” he said.
MoQ general manager Emile Sarkis said: “We thank the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Al-Jumeliyah Girls' Forum for this important initiative, and are proud to host such an educational and artistic exhibition.”
“We also appreciate the Department of International Studies and Affairs at the General Directorate of Drug Enforcement of the Ministry of Interior, for the great effort to combat drugs and protect our generations,” he added. “We all are uniting our forces to shed light on this critical issue in our community, and this exhibition for children is an open space for them to express their thoughts.”
“We are confident that this initiative has delivered the right message to our visitors to raise their awareness on how to tackle such an issue,” Sarkis said.
Curated and co-ordinated by Noora al-Shahwani, activities co-ordinator at Al-Jumeliyah Girls' Forum, the exhibition gave children the creative space to display their drawings and attract the interest of people towards drug abuse.
This came with the lifting of coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions, allowing children to enter malls again.
In addition, the Department of International Studies and Affairs distributed educational booklets and leaflets, which contain information on how to combat drugs and protect the new generations from its effects.
Mall of Qatar’s visitors lauded the exhibition and its message, the statement added.
The exhibition was visited by Khalifa al-Shahwani, Noora al-Shahwani, Youth Centres Department director Fawaz Abdalla Almseifri, AlReyada Girls Centre director Najla Alhajri, and Maha al-Rumaihi, director of the Youth Affairs Department at the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
