Qatar underlined its firm support for the international and the United Nations' efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, in accordance with Geneva I Communique 2012 and relevant Security council resolutions, looking forward to a continuous co-operation to end the Syrian crisis.
Addressing the ministerial meeting on Syria which was held in Rome on Monday, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said that the time has come to act in a different way after more than 10 years of human tragedies and suffering for the brotherly Syrian people; and to discuss opportunities and initiatives that can help settle the Syrian crisis in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254.
He praised the efforts exerted by the UN Secretary-General and his Special Envoy for Syria to support the political track and reach a political settlement to the Syrian crisis.
HE Sheikh Mohamed stressed the need for setting a specific date for completing the drafting of a new Syrian constitution, in order to pave the way for the transition to the second phase, which includes holding elections in accordance with the new constitution.
He noted that easing the intensity of the fighting, reaching a permanent ceasefire and fighting terrorism, in addition to delivering humanitarian aid to all areas in Syria, would contribute to creating the atmosphere for the political process and reaching a solution that ends the suffering of the Syrian people.
He stressed the need to ensure the appropriate environment for the delivery of aid of all kinds to those in need in all regions of Syria without exception, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution No. 2533 on border crossings. (QNA)
