Under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani, Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) celebrated the graduation of its fourth and fifth cohorts of students on June 26.
Present on the occasion were Dr Azmi Bishara, chair of the Board of Trustees, and members of the board, including HE Dr Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali al-Thani, vice-chair of the Board, and Dr Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad in addition to Dr Abdelwahab El Affendi, DI acting president, Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser al-Misnad, DI executive director - Administration and Finance Division, respective deans of the DI schools and a number of graduate students who attended through video conferencing.
In a press statement Sunday, DI said HE the Prime Minister honoured the graduates of the fifth cohort, numbering 215 students, distributed over 18 master's programmes offered by the Institute in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Public Administration and Development Economics.
The ceremony, which was held amid Covid-19 precautionary and preventive measures, began with honouring the fifth cohort of students and followed by the graduation of the fourth cohort, which included 182 graduates honoured by HE Dr Sheikh Abdulla.
In his speech on this occasion, Dr El Affendi said: "Greetings and congratulations to you today as you make an important transition in your path in an effort to move from a student position to a scholar, a journey that begins here and does not end, because acquiring knowledge does not stop."
The acting president said "it has not been easy to overcome the complications that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to all aspects of human life in general, and students in particular over the past two years. Although the Institute has been able to maintain the continuity of education through combined efforts of all employees, the challenges remained great, psychological pressures were enormous, and the requirements were daunting. Thus, both cohorts must feel proud for overcoming these difficulties."
The speech was followed by a short video that included a shared speech for the graduates of the fourth and fifth cohorts, after which HE the Prime Minister, Dr Bishara and Dr El Affendi delivered certificates to graduates of the fifth cohort. HE Dr Sheikh Abdulla and Dr El Affendi gave certificates to the graduates of the fourth cohort.
A number of students expressed happiness at graduating despite the exceptional circumstances imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
