Qatar Charity (QC) has opened Taiba Education City in Omdurman, Sudan in a festive atmosphere, in the presence of officials and the public.
The complex is the "largest of its kind" in Sudan and provides inclusive services for orphaned children, QC has said in a statement.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by the Sudanese Minister of Social Development, Ahmed Adam Bakheet; the ambassador of Qatar to Sudan, Abdul Rahman bin Ali al-Kubaisi; the CEO’s assistant for the International Operations and Programmes sector at QC, Nawaf Abdullah al-Hammadi, and the CEO’s assistant for the Programmes and Community Development sector at QC, Faisal Rashid al-Fahida.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Bakheet thanked Qatar for continuously supporting the Sudanese people. The minister described Taiba Education City as "a vital and significant edifice", noting Qatar Charity’s educational and health projects and sponsorship programmes implemented worldwide.
He hailed the major projects implemented within the framework of the Doha peace agreement.
Al-Kubaisi said the opening of Taiba Education City marks the continuation of humanitarian and charitable works, service and development projects implemented by Qatar in the various states of Sudan, in co-operation with the public and private sectors. He noted that the works, services and projects include those implemented by Qatar Charity across Sudan in the fields of education, health, water and sponsorship, in addition to building model villages within Qatar's initiative for the development of Darfur.
Al-Kubaisi emphasised that these humanitarian and charitable projects complement the official Qatari efforts to strengthen and develop relations between the two countries, and are consistent with the humanitarian roles played by Qatar under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to contribute to the development regionally and internationally.
Al-Hammadi said Taiba Education City provides inclusive care for 500 orphans who receive educational, healthcare, cultural, developmental and sports services. He added that this multi-service city also benefits the surrounding community and neighbouring villages and towns in the fields of health, water and education.
Al-Hammadi indicated that the 9,000sqm Taiba Education City is a model project of Qatar Charity in Sudan and consists of several facilities, such as a foundation school with nine classrooms and a computer lab, a secondary school with four classrooms, a laboratory, a library and a computer lab, offices and a health centre that will provide medical services for students and poor residents from surrounding villages.
He also noted that the city has various administrative facilities, dining and activity halls, sports facilities and a dormitory for 500 orphans.
He said since the opening of QC’s office in Sudan, hundreds of wells have been drilled, and hundreds of schools, mosques, hospitals and health centres have been built, the statement adds.
“The is an excellent experience by all educational and humanitarian standards, and we hope that it would provide inclusive care for orphans according to the highest standards of quality,” said al-Fahida, also the representative of the donor. He hoped that Taiba Education City would be an inspiring academic and educational model.
At the end of the ceremony, the civil administration in the state of Khartoum and the local people’s committee for the opening of the city honoured al-Kubaisi, QC, many community organisations and personalities who contributed to the success of the project. Besides, QC honoured the Qatari ambassador and many supporters and partners.
