UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stressed that the Covid-19 pandemic allowed the world to rebuild its economy in a way that respects the environment, safeguard the planet, and realises the aspirations of the future generations of high-quality jobs that does not marginalise anyone.
Johnson was speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum, Powered by Bloomberg and discussed his country's sustainable development efforts over the past 30 years.
He said that during that time, the UK cut its carbon emissions by more than 40% even though it grew 78%.
He also noted that 10 years ago, 40 % of the electricity produced in the UK came from coal, compared to 2% now.
He added that the UK will eliminate the use of coal for electricity by 2024.
Johnson called on other world countries to cooperate in developing the global economy, saying that it was a matter of will given the technology to achieve that is now available.
He also said that the United Kingdom is working with other friendly nations to ensure the efforts to leave a clean planet for future generations is successful. (QNA)
