Ambassador of Qatar to Russia Sheikh Ahmed bin Nasser al-Thani, stated that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani gave a whole new direction, during St Petersburg International Economic Forum, to raise the level of trade partnership between Qatar and Russia, and to strengthen the distinguished relations between the two countries.
In an interview with 'Sputnik', the envoy considered Russia as a strategic and important partner for Qatar. He said that there is comprehensive co-operation between the two countries in all fields, stressing that the St Petersburg Forum will give a strong impetus to strengthening the partnership and doubling the level of trade exchange between the two countries.
Ambassador al-Thani noted that more than 60 joint co-operation agreements were signed during the forum between government institutions and the private sector from Qatar with similar Russian institutions and companies. He added that the two countries aspire to raise the level of trade exchange to a higher level compared to what exists because the two countries have great economic potentials, rich experiences and diverse opportunities for cooperation.
The envoy pointed out that the Qatari investments in the Russian market amounted to about US$13.5bn, which is the largest invested in Russia, as it is concentrated in the energy sector, construction, trade and other fields and stated that there is intent in the two countries to expand the economic partnership, and some of them will be announced after the forum, and there is a large amount of investments between Qatar and Russia, noting that the presence of Qatar as a guest of honor at the forum gave an impetus to intensify trade exchange and investments.
Ambassador al-Thani explained that everyone knows that Russia has a strong economy, and a country with reliable partnerships. He stressed Qatar's readiness for co-operation and partnership with Russia, adding that there are many major agreements that will be concluded in the coming period between the two countries. He spoke about the prospects of Qatar's acquisition of a part of Vnukovo Airport in Moscow and the Qatari investments in the infrastructure of the aviation sector in Russia, stating that the agreements between Qatar and Russia in this field are almost complete, and thanks to the impetus given by the forum, these agreements will be ready and complete.
The envoy added that Qatar has distinguished relations with the Russian side in trade, economy and culture, not only with Moscow, but with the region as well, stressing the participation in Kazan economic summit, which will be held at the end of June 2021.
