Advanced irrigation system is helping the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) properly maintain the parks and green spaces while remarkably saving the water, a senior MME official has said. Mohamed Abdullah Abbas, Head of the Public Parks Department in Doha Municipality, recently told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the municipality has an advanced system to irrigate the parks and green spaces. “The municipality is making use of advanced systems that are controlled remotely via an electronic application or via the website. This is with the aim of saving water used for irrigation. Currently, about 90% of gardens in Doha Municipality are irrigated in this way. These advanced systems have contributed to saving water by between 50 and 60 percent according to the nature of the crops,” he said.
He explained that the municipality is keen to maintain and preserve the public parks and green spaces in order to maintain there beauty and appearance. “The maintenance works continue throughout the year, especially the intensive maintenance operations that are carried out in April and October. “We make sure that the parks remain open during these operations. We are satisfied with only partial closure. And the ministry has contracts with the private sector to maintain these parks. These contracts are renewed every three years,” he said.
He explained that the Public Parks Department in Doha Municipality is responsible for the supervision of about 50% of the parks in the country. It supervises and maintains 43 parks within it's administrative limits. These are in addition to other green spaces on roads and the Corniche. “There is close cooperation between the department and other bodies concerned including the Public Works Authority (Ashghal),” he added.
