Manny Machado and Brian O’Grady each homered and drove in three runs Monday night as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting Chicago Cubs 9-4.
Machado had two sacrifice flies before triggering a three-run eighth with a leadoff homer – after Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo dropped his foul popup for an error – against Cubs reliever Cory Abbott. O’Grady, who was called up from Triple-A El Paso earlier in the day, hit a two-run homer off Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay in the third, and he doubled home the Padres’ final run in the eighth.
Ryan Weathers (3-2) picked up the win despite allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Alzolay (4-5) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and five walks before leaving the game due to a blister one hitter into the fourth. He struck out four. The Padres again struggled with runners on base, going 0-for-10 until Eric Hosmer’s RBI single in the eighth. San Diego twice left the bases loaded while ending a two-game losing streak. The Cubs, meanwhile, fell to 1-4 since sweeping the Padres in a three-game series last week at Wrigley Field. The Padres scored four of their runs on Machado’s two sacrifice flies and two groundouts.
San Diego loaded the bases before Alzolay could retire a hitter in the first, but the only run in the inning came on a groundout by Hosmer. The Padres made it 2-0 in the second on a double by Victor Caratini, a balk and Machado’s sacrifice fly to left. In the third, O’Grady followed a two-out walk drawn by Jurickson Profar with his first homer of the season and the third of his career. The Cubs rallied in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs against Weathers on back-to-back singles by Kris Bryant and Rizzo and a walk to Patrick Wisdom.
Jake Marisnick then hit a slow roller up the first base line. Weathers fielded the ball but threw it past Hosmer, allowing Bryant and Rizzo to score on the hit and error. The Cubs bunted the runners into scoring position and pulled to within a run of the lead when Wisdom scored on Sergio Alcantara’s sacrifice fly.
The Padres regained control with two runs in the sixth. Cubs reliever Keegan Thompson issued back-to-back walks to Caratini and pinch hitter Ha-Seong Kim with one out, and then advanced both with a wild pitch. Caratini scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Tommy Pham, and Kim scored on Machado’s second sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.

Red Sox take makeup game vs Marlins for 5th straight win
Christian Arroyo amassed two hits, two runs and two RBIs, leading the host Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night. Miami, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games, stranded 14 runners, including at least two in six different innings. The Marlins, who left the bases loaded in the sixth, went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
The Red Sox won their fifth consecutive game, thanks largely to the top three hitters in the batting order. Arroyo, Alex Verdugo and Xander Bogaerts combined for six of Boston’s 10 hits. The Monday contest made up a game rained out in Boston on May 30. The Red Sox beat the Marlins on May 28 and May 29 to open what was scheduled to be a three-game series. Right-hander Nick Pivetta, who is 8-1 since Boston acquired him last August, fell one out short of qualifying for a victory Monday. Laboring with a high pitch count, he allowed seven hits, three walks and two runs while striking out six in 4 2/3 innings. He threw 54 of his 92 pitches for strikes.
Five Red Sox relievers combined to hold Miami to one run over 4 1/3 innings. Hirokazu Sawamura (2-0) earned the win by throwing 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Adam Ottavino got the final four outs for his third save of the season.
Miami’s Zach Thompson, a 27-year-old right-hander making his major league debut, started and took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits in three innings. Thompson (0-1) struck out one and walked one.
The Marlins were led by Starling Marte, who went 3-for-4 with a home run. The Red Sox played their third consecutive game without outfielder J.D. Martinez, who has a wrist injury. Miami got back first baseman Garrett Cooper, who had missed two games in a row due to back stiffness. He went 0-for-4 with a walk. Boston opened the scoring in the first inning. With no one on and two outs, Bogaerts singled, advanced to third on Rafael Devers’ single and scored on Thompson’s wild pitch. The Red Sox made it 2-0 in the third on consecutive doubles by Arroyo and Verdugo. Miami cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth. Adam Duvall doubled, stole third base and scored on Jorge Alfaro’s RBI single.
