The collaboration between Qatar Charity (QC) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has resulted in the implementation of eight projects in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Malawi, and Bangladesh during 2019-2021, QC said on Friday.
Three projects have been completed, while another five projects are being implemented in the areas of health, shelter and water, it was explained in a statement.
The recently-concluded projects were implemented in Yemen and Iraq to contribute to alleviating the daily suffering of crisis-hit communities.
In Yemen, the IOM, in partnership with QC, is working to support Al Arouss Hospital in Ta’iz governorate’s Sabir Al Mawadim district.
The project focuses on providing basic emergency maternal obstetric and neonatal care for displaced people and the communities hosting them. Since February 2021, nearly 2,200 women and children have benefitted from maternal and neonatal care services at Al Arouss Hospital, which serves an area with an estimated population of 50,000 people.
“Prior to this intervention, Al Arouss Hospital was no better than a small health centre with a limited range of maternal and neonatal services,” said Dr Fahd Sofi from IOM’s health team in Aden.
“Through this support from Qatar Charity, the Hospital can now provide non-surgical emergency maternal and neonatal care, enabling the hospital to receive a wide range of maternal cases and provide 24/7 care,” he added.
“Women and children often bear the brunt of Yemen’s crisis and so ensuring their access to health care is vital to their survival and the country’s eventual recovery,” said Ahmed Saad AlRumaihi, director of Emergency and Relief, QC.
“Qatar Charity is proud to partner with IOM to extend humanitarian support in order to improve the conditions of Yemeni displaced people, especially in the health sector,” he stated.
Through this project, women can receive antenatal, delivery and post-natal health care services as well as consultation and treatment for gynaecological conditions. The hospital also provides children with primary health services, which include diagnosing and treatment of various diseases, supported by IOM.
IOM and QC support has made it possible to overcome the staff shortage at the hospital. Now, there are an additional gyanecology and obstetrician specialist and seven midwives available to receive patients at all times of the day.
In Iraq, IOM has recently helped 18 families rebuild their destroyed homes in West Mosul with support from QC. The project contributed to supporting durable solutions to displacement in Iraq and provided support to the most vulnerable families.
The projects implemented in co-operation between QC and IOM in Iraq include supporting health and protection services in Nineveh, and enhancing the capacity to prevent and control the Covid-19 pandemic. A project was also completed in response to the water crisis in Al Qurnah.
QC is also implementing a multi-sector assistance project for people affected by the Syrian crisis, and strengthening the health system to improve access to health care services for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. It also implemented a cyclone response project in Malawi.
