Qatar has called for a comprehensive approach based in the essence of international co-operation and solidarity to achieve the desired financial recovery in view of the economic and financial challenges for the global economy owing to the pandemic.
"The next stage will not be easy economically and financially for any of the countries involved in the global economy, especially since the desired financial recovery can only be achieved by opening broader horizons for co-operation between nations and peoples at all levels," HE the Minister of Commerce and Industry and Acting Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari, told the opening ceremony of the 24th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2021.
The other dignitaries present on the occasion included Andrey Belousov, First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia; Edouard Ngirente, Prime Minister of Rwanda; Tran Tuan Anh, chairman of the Vietnamese Party Central Committee's Economic Commission; and David Malpass, President of the World Bank Group.
Highlighting that pandemic had shown the fragility of the development systems prevalent around the world; he said there was a "for devising a comprehensive approach based in essence of international co-operation and solidarity.”
The minister called on governments and business people to unite and provide solutions that contribute to restoring investor confidence, as well as to open the prospects for building a better future for all.
Elaborating on Qatar’s achievements during the global economic recovery, he highlighted the success of the proactive and rapid measures taken by the state to reduce the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Qatar has sought to back the private sector by providing financial incentives amounting to QR75bn, he said, referring to the new support plans approved by the Council of Ministers in April 2021, which constituted an important addition to the private sector funding package.
In this context, al-Kuwari referred to the initiative to extend the QDB or Qatar Development Bank's National Guarantee Programme until the end of September 2021.
Moreover, Qatar, which has surpassed the 2.6mn dose mark, is expecting to vaccinate three-fourth of its population by the end of next month, according to him.
On the sidelines of SPIEF, al-Kuwari held separate meetings with Maxim Reshetnikov, Russian Minister of Economic Development; chief executive of Glencore; and Andrey Kostin, president and chairman of VTB Bank.
During the meeting, there was an exchange of views on several economic and investment issues and developments of common interest, in addition to looking into means to enhance co-operation and co-ordination with Russia in facing the repercussions of the pandemic.
