The Doha Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) recently organised a session on 'Future of Finance', covering two topics – Sustainability Reporting: Global Trends and Digital Currencies – Financial and Regulatory Issues.
Nihar Jambusaria, ICAI president; and Dr Debashis Mitra, ICAI vice president; were the chief guest and the guest of honour, respectively.
The guests were introduced by chapter chairman Nirlep Bhatt, who highlighted the activities of the chapter and how members are playing pivotal role in contributing to the ever-vibrant and progressive Qatari economy.
Jambusaria was very appreciative of the ‘Excom’ of Doha Chapter and also spelt out various strategic initiatives of the ICAI, while emphasising on the remarkable global growth with some 41 overseas chapters and 27 representative offices.
He highlighted the need of re-skilling and upskilling and appealed the members to constantly update their knowledge and skills.
Dr Mitra spoke about future of finance and highlighted the increased emphasis on the ‘3-Ps’ – planet, people and profit – signifying growing importance of the non-financial measures in the reporting.
He also touched upon the digital currencies, risks associated with it and opportunities for the finance professionals amidst technological advancements.
Dewaki Nandan introduced the first speaker of the session and conducted the questions and answers. Dr Sanjeev Singhal, chairman, Sustainability Reporting Standards Board (SRSB), led the session.
Arun Somanath introduced the second speaker of the session and conducted the question and answer session.
Dr Srinivas Yanamandra, chief (Compliance) at Brics New Development Bank, demonstrated his expertise on the topic – digital currencies – financial and regulatory Issues. He explained the areas like Bitcoin, Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. He was also very positive that digital currencies and new technology will change the face of finance professionals.
The event was opened by chapter secretary Vignesh Kalyanaraman and a vote of thanks was proposed by Kishore Alex.
