DPS- Modern Indian School (DPS-MIS) debaters attended a number of online workshops organised by QatarDebate as part of the Ramadan training series.
Anah Merchant, Drishti Tibrewal, Vaidehi Rogiye, Geetika Yalamanchilli, Antara Alurkar, Manjushree Magesh, Asin Ashraf, Ishita Golash and Sharvi Patwardhan attended a workshop on ‘Social Justice in South’ with their coach Jaya Majumder via Zoom.
Resource person Pragyan Acharya from Nepal briefed the attendees on evolution of social justice in South Asia, specifically India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. He explained about the colonial history, invocation of the spirit of activism, various protests during colonial times and freedom struggle movements. There were also references about the recent protests that continue in the spirit of gaining social justice. Lastly, its relevance to debating terms was discussed.

Resource person Amanda Chan while introducing the attendees to environment and climate change discussed the disparities in world due to political influence on environment and shared information about the link between economy and environment and increasing climatic activism.
A brief discussion on how Covid-19 pandemic is reviving the environment was an opportunity for the debaters to share their ideas. The workshop provided the debaters a deep understanding of environmental issues and equipped them with ideas for future debates.
Aryan Dubey, Azhar Jaleel Muhammed, Aritra Ghosh, Yash Sah, Aditya Jain, Prithwiraj Purkait, Daiwik Dhar, Mehull Girdhar, Govind Krishna, Nikkil Dcruz, Surya Kauthik and Krish Nagrani along with their coach Jaya Majumder attended the workshop on ‘Debate Morals’, conducted by Amanda Chan in collaboration with QatarDebate.
The workshop revolved around fundamental basics of moral philosophy and discussed about dilemmas and real-life conundrums that influence the decision-making process. It also elaborated on deep and fascinating ideas like consent and benefit acquired in obligations, limitations of freedoms and the factors that affect the value of meaning people ascribe to things in life. Finally, specific examples of debate topics were discussed in which these theories would work. It was indeed an enlightening session for all.
The workshop on ‘Capitalism and Social Movements’ was attended by Aryan Dubey, Azhar Jaleel Muhammed, Aritra Ghosh, Yash Sah, Aditya Jain, Prithwiraj Purkait, Daiwik Dhar, Mehull Girdhar, Govind Krishna, Surya Kauthik, Nikkil Dcruz and Krish Nagrani along with their coach Jaya Majumder.
Resource person Amanda Chan introduced the debaters to the idea of capitalism and social justice movements before delving into plenty of illustrations and real-life circumstances to consolidate these ideas. Common ground between the economic system of capitalism, advantages of the symbiotic relationship, normalisation of marginalised communities were discussed along with harmful effects of dissimilarity in structure and objectives on historically marginalised groups and their progression.
