Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines Teodoro Locsin affirmed his country's keenness on deepening and developing bilateral relations with Qatar, expressing his aspiration for more fruitful co-operation between the two countries. "Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations. It is a celebration of enduring friendship, fruitful relationships over the years, and optimism for our future," Locsin said in a recorded video message marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Qatar and the Philippines.
Locsin extended his deepest thanks to the Qatari government for ensuring the welfare of about 240,000 Filipino citizens in Qatar, adding, "Qatari nationals will always be welcome in the Philippines, and you will feel that you are among friends."
The Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs said that the government of Qatar has instituted bold reforms to protect the rights of migrant workers, and its decision echoed wisdom in recognising the role of migrant workers in nation building. He added, "Filipinos are looking for additional labour reforms that would further promote the welfare and competitiveness of Filipinos in Qatar, and it brings us pride that Filipinos, who regard Qatar as their second home, have contributed significantly to the development of its key economic sectors, including healthcare, construction and hospitality."
Secretary Locsin thanked His Highness the Amir and the Government of Qatar for continuously caring for Filipinos and other migrant workers during the coronavirus pandemic and for offering vaccinations free of charge, adding this is another manifestation of Qatar's constant generosity towards others, including Filipinos, especially in difficult times.
He added: "Last year, Qatar donated around 50 metric tonnes of rescue and relief equipment to the Philippine Red Cross following the devastation caused by the typhoon that struck the Philippines. We always remember and remain grateful for this help."
